A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the spaniel breeds that is in the "Toy Group." Their adult size should be 12 - 13” at the shoulders, 13 - 18 lbs in weight. They come in four colors: Blenheim (red/white), tri-color (black/white/and red in specific places), and whole colour (black/tan in specific places) and ruby (solid red).
What are they like?
Cavaliers are very friendly, too friendly in fact, you have to protect them, they won’t protect you. They are very sporty in nature, will chase anything that moves, including cars, and can run very fast and catch mice as well as a cat. They are good swimmers and love the outdoors all yr round. At the same time, they are sensitive and love the warmth of the house, cuddling and being a lap dog. When approached by strange dogs or people they greet with wagging tails and show submission by crouching down or rolling over for a tummy rub, but they do not show fear.
How are they taken care of?
Cavaliers require lots of exercise; always on a leash in unfenced areas, a good hour a day, split into two, ½ hour sessions is good but they can do much more. They need regular grooming once or twice a week when they shed, with comb and brush and scissor trimming around paws, to remove fur that picks up dirt and snowballs. Nails should be trimmed twice a month, and this can all be done by the owner. They do not need to go regularly to a groomer. They can be bathed whenever they need it. Cavaliers crate train well but should never be left alone all day, they are people dogs. They love dry kibble and their teeth should be brushed regularly.
How long will they live?
Cavaliers live an average of 10 yrs, and some live as long as 15 years. Even though there is mitral valve disease in this breed, many live a long life with it, coping nicely with age related problems when cared for properly.
Do they make good pets?
Of all the breeds of dogs, Cavaliers are one of the best choices for a pet. They are just the right size for children and seniors, houses or apts, and love to do everything with their people families. They are a joy to train, being very intelligent and alert, and eager to please
