What
is an English Cocker Spaniel? An English Cocker Spaniel is one of the spaniel breeds in the Sporting group. They average about 16" high at the shoulders and should weigh about 30-40 lbs, males being a little bigger and heavier than females. They are larger than the more well known American Cocker Spaniel but smaller than the Springer Spaniel. Eng Cockers come in many colors, about 20% are solid colors (liver, black, gold, red);60% are roans (orange roan, blue roan, liver roan); and 20% are other colors (black/white, liver/white, tri-color, blue roan/tan, liver roan/tan, orange/white, black/tan, liver/tan) Such a variety of color and pattern makes them such an exciting breed of dog to look at. What are they like by nature? Eng Cockers are "attention hogs", very persistently and exuberantly affectionate. They do not know why they cannot be with their owners all the time. They are loyal and moderately protective, reserved at first with strangers, but curious about them at the same time, following people around all day and "helping" with every daily task. They have strong hunting instincts, very powerful noses, and love to run, retrieve and swim. Are they easy to take care of? Eng Cockers need fairly active lifestyles, lots of exercise and grooming. The face and top of the ears should be closely clipped with electric clippers and the rest of the silky coat and feathering, needs regular combing and scissor trimming. They do not have as much coat as the American Cocker, but the paws need trimming to stay dirt and matt free. A good brushing once a week and once a month trimming is adequate and can be done at home. They do well in training as they love treats but should have basic training before 1 yr of age as some become stubborn. They adapt well to crate training, exploding out of their crates in the morning to great the new day, with such enthusiasm and energy. How long will they live? This breed is blessed with a great life span of 12-14 yrs . Health issues that can pop up are hip dysplasia, deafness, blindness (PRA) and liver disease. However all of these health issues can be eliminated in puppies if you buy from a responsible breeder who checks for these problems in the adult dogs before breeding them. Do they make good pets? Yes, Eng Cockers are good pets if not left alone all day, and if given an active lifestyle. Their love and zest for life is so exciting and encouraging to see, their sportyness fits in with active families and they are also very cuddly in the evening, wanting to be on your lap. They get along with other types of dogs and cats if introduced early in life, and play for hours with them. Their temperament varies from family to family and depends a great deal on their environment. |
